Finding Your New Niche in Life By: Herndon L. Davis
|
Enveloped and swirled within a fanciful Disney-ish inspirational musical score and
loaded with simple yet deeply grounded messages of diversity, motivation, and a
valuable lesson in finding your own niche in life; a few weeks ago I watched
probably the best feel good movie of the year, Kinky Boots.
If it hasn’t already made it to DVD just yet, I strongly encourage you to travel to
your local independent movie theater to see this Miramax film, which is based upon
the events of a true story. Without giving away too much of the plot, the movie
offers up three important lessons of life: Valuing and Embracing Diversity, Creating
Your Own Way, Discovering Your New Niche in Life.

1. Valuing and Embracing Diversity - Two men; one black, one white. Their
lives are intersected in the most peculiar of ways. Charlie is a heterosexual and
engaged to be married and is secure within his sexuality. Lola is single and a
performing transsexual who too is also secure within his sexuality.
What they soon find is that they need each other to help each other’s goals, dreams,
and aspirations come true. There is the typical initial intolerance and a few more
scenes which get to the core of homosexual intolerance, but by the end of this
comedy we see that as human beings both characters still need each other. The
two are interdependent, each coming to the table with valuable insight and a piece of
the overall puzzle.
Lola has the creative spirit and Charlie has the means to manufacture it. The two
men are forced to recognize that although they are totally different, that different
really is okay. Hence both characters’ diversity is valued and embraced without
crossing the line. The end result of the two working together is success not failure.

2. Creating Your Own Way – In the beginning of the film, Charlie is forced to
close his family’s shoe business after generations of existence. However, he’s
given a swift kick in the pants when he’s challenged by one of his employees to
not just give up, but instead find a way or create one in order to stay in business.
Basically it is the employee’s harsh words that lights a fire of tenacity, motivation,
and a reaching out beyond Charlie’s comfort zones to see if there could indeed be
away to save the family business and the jobs which accompany it.

3. Discovering Your New Niche in Life – Probably the most influential lesson
conveyed in the film is to look around you and see what others don’t see. In other
words, discover your new niche in life, whether it be in business or in your
personal life. Opportunity lies all around us, it’s ours for the taking, but we first
have to be receptive to receiving it.
We must see and hear what we don’t initially see and hear with our physical eyes
and ears. The process of discovering your new niche requires patience, prayer,
meditation, and a willingness to truly step out on faith far beyond your currently
existing borders and parameters of life.
Discovering your new niche sometimes will require you to pursue a goal at all
costs even when everyone including the people closest to you doubt you the
most. Discovering your new niche in life truly means to be led by an internal,
intuitive, instinctive calling and expression that is seeking to be manifested in your
life.
Kinky Boots was a wonderful surprise and uplift for me. It confirmed a lot of
things in my own life and pushed me further in pursuing a whole new niche and
path for myself within the rapidly evolving world of multi-media. As a result, I
now seek out what new niches, directions, and paths I must take in order to
become whatever it is that my Creator desires me to become.
