I met her 1.5 years ago at a benefit in Los Angeles. She
was then just an unknown singer performing that
evening as she tightly clutched her microphone with
the stage presence of a pro. Her vocal uniqueness
captured my attention so much that I never forgot it.
Later that evening I searched for her during the after
party where we exchanged niceties as well as business
cards. From then on I kept up with her progress
through her occasional email updates.
Nearly two years later Rachel Lynn has burst onto the
music scene with a critically acclaimed music CD that
combines her diverse vocal talent into a cohesive arc of
rock, jazz, folk, with nuisances of pop. She penned
nearly all of her lyrics through both singular and shared
experiences of life. Hence her vocals stand upon her
desire to understand life in all its vibrant hues and
colors.

Rachel Lynn: An Emerging Artist of Diverse Proportions

Pursuing Her Life
If there’s one thing that Rachel Lynn possesses, it’s gutsy faith to pursue her calling in
music. From teaching herself how to play the guitar, to assembling a band, laying down
tracks and getting industry buzz all in a relatively short period of time, Rachel’s story is one of
inspiration as well as talent.
In fact, hearing her talk about realizing her dreams gives one the impression that her success
has been an effortless, natural progression of life when, in actuality, it has taken her many
hours of determination and sweat to create the earthy and eclectic sound that brands her
identity.
"What keeps me going…is being able to channel and express wisdom, new ideas and
experience. It’s my job as an artist to be a sort of conductor and I take it very seriously."
But her wisdom did not come without many different sources of inspiration from those who
came before her. In fact, Rachel channels the ancestors for her guidance as she explains what
and who inspires her life.
"I consider everyone, who has found their place in this world and made themselves a
champion, an inspiration. People in history who have especially inspired me are Gandhi, MLK
Jr., Jesus, Shakespeare, Mother Teresa, Picasso…I could go on!”
Rachel is a person of faith and unlike other rising artists she isn’t afraid to embrace her
spirituality and in fact revel in it. With bright eyed enthusiasm she explained to me what here
spiritual beliefs are and how they have guided her to her current success.
“Honestly, there is nothing in my life that doesn’t center on my spirituality. Who I am is who I
know myself to be…someone who God knew way before I did. I don’t have to incorporate God
into my life; He’s ever-present, and all I have to do is say ‘yes’ and ‘allow’. I am being guided.
I feel unconditional love from above and that’s what I choose to share with my fans: that
feeling of purpose, love and acceptance.”
Anne Murray, Amy Grant, Neil Diamond and the Mamas and the Papas were just a few of
Rachel's earliest impressions of music, its lyrics and the rhythmic beat that accompanied it.
Each of these artists had and still have mature and expressive voices, voices which help to
form the sound that Rachel expresses with today.
But things started to change for Rachel early in her youth and soon in her teen years as
she experienced dynamic changes as her musical tastes began to broaden. From pop, rock,
and soon jazz and gospel, Rachel began to understand the beauty and the language of
music and the diversity that comes with it. She carefully explaines her musical
transformation as the following:
“My very first cassette tape, Madonna, was gifted to me when I was seven years old. I
listened to that tape day and night and memorized each and every word; and so began my
young obsession with pop music.
Later, when my family moved to a remote farming community I began to listen to and
appreciate the story-telling nature of country music. From then on each move prompted a
new phase…from Grunge to Rock to Jazz to Hip-Hop…then in college I was introduced to
Gospel music and was able to study the music of the Americas: Native-American, Latin-
American and African-American music. I think I may be in line for being the poster child of
confusion…eh-hem…I mean fusion.”
The Guitar, The Band & The Music CD
|
After taking only a few months of formal guitar lessons, Rachel ripped the musical umbilical
cord and started creating her own style of music. She needed to get the basics down first
before she could begin to paint her own musical portrait of life and experiences.
Next, she decided it was finally time to assemble a band, not just any band, but a symbiotic
musical expression that could carry her into the heights of music. “That was one of the
most challenging experiences of my life. I held auditions for the band when I first came to L.
A. in 2005.
Luckily a good friend of mine helped me with the process or I would have had a heart
attack or at least passed out a few times. I’ve been through all possible scenarios of
bands…from switching out members to changing instrumentation all together. In the end
the process is what helps you to realize what works best for you and your music. And I am
SO happy and grateful that, today, I’ve got it figured out.”
Then it was time to head into the studio and make the magic of her dreams become a
reality, here new CD "New Day." She explains that "New Day is simply a ‘soulful expression
of experience’. The songs run a spread of emotion from denial and anger, to love and
passion, to rejuvenation and hope.
The CD is about being true to yourself and what you’re feeling no matter what the cost may
be. The end message is to move past the ‘bad feelings’ of anger and guilt into a space of
renewal and emotional freedom where we, as champions, can instigate a spirit of change in
the world around us."
If you ever get a chance meet Rachel you will vibe that she is full of life and activity; lot of
activity. Her energy serves her well as she embarks upon a tumultuous journey of
success, faith, and determination for the remainder of the year.
"2007 has started out as an amazing year for me as well as for Rolling Beat Records and
RB Publishing. We’ve licensed, now, with MTV and a local production company for Film
and are excited to do more of the same and on a larger scale…
We’ve started on a new EP project with Producer Jeffery David that will feature brand new
music with an organic tone and a powerful message…
We’re looking at doing a regional tour with another local label at the end of the
summer…the list is ongoing and unlimited in our eyes. Whatever the universe has in
mind is where we’ll go next, knowing that the end destination is one of success, service,
love and happiness."

Tell me about your childhood and cultural background.
Well, I grew up in a family of educators; my mother is an elementary teacher and my father is an elementary administrator. What does that mean? It means that I was constantly learning and, in line with that, constantly asking questions. I have two fabulous and beautiful older sisters who made ‘growing- up’ that much more interesting and fun. They also paved the way for me to make all the mistakes in the book without my parents being too shocked. Thanks guys (smiles).
My cultural background is just as eclectic as my singing background. My grandmother on my mom’s side is Native-Alaskan with a heritage of Tsimshian and Makah. My father’s family is German and Spanish Bosque. Throw some Irish and and British in their around 1/100 percent and you have Rachel Lynn in a box (smiles).

What advice would you give
to someone pursuing their
dreams?
Wow…I think that being
able to give good advice to
other aspiring artists is a
part of my dream,
ironically. So, thank you
for asking (smiles).
The main ingredient to
success is living with an
attitude of gratitude:
waking up every morning
and thanking God for your
house, your food, your
friends and family, your
talent…and living each day
as if you already have
everything you want in
life. The universe will race
to catch up with your
powerful positive presence
and you’ll then experience
an unfoldment of all that
you want, in God’s time.
It’s a challenge at first,
admittedly. The hardest
thing for me was letting go
of trying to control and
manipulate the future, the
present and those people
around me. Once I finally
let go, I experienced a
freedom that I hadn’t felt
in decades and doors
began to open left and
right. You still have to
work, mind you… you have
to say ‘yes’ to that little
voice inside you guiding
you to take the next step.
But, the worry is
gone…and happiness is a
now thing, not something
that comes later on.
I’d like to, if I could, give a
shout out to one of the
most influential
documentaries I’ve seen
called, ‘The Secret’. It’s a
life changing DVD that can
be seen at www.thesecret.
tv. Check it out, y’all!
Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Why, yes!
I’d like to thank you, Herndon, for being such a powerful influence to our present and future generations. You’ve taken your own personal thoughts and ideas to the next step of actually making a change, and I commend you for that.
And lastly, thank you, sincerely, for recognizing my love and my talent. You’ re awesome!
