So what do you think about
Forgiveness

Blog your thoughts here!!
As I listen to Kirk Franklin’s “Imagine Me” I am struck by the simple beauty and power of the
words of the song.

…I imagine me in a place of no insecurities…

…Letting go of all of the ones who hurt me 'Cause they never did deserve me…

…Saying no to thoughts that try to control me…

…Over what my mamma said and healed from what my daddy did and I wanna live and not
read that page again…

In reflecting upon the song I am reminded of the painful reality that so many of us have been
deeply hurt, scorned, and shattered by horrid experiences and life’s circumstances.  Yet to
have the strength and the determination to simply say forget what they said, forget what
he/she did and Imagine Me in a place of no insecurities, in a home of peace, love and
wholeness is truly an awesome statement and a vivid testimony of what needs to happen and
repeated around the world.

As I continue to encounter people from various walks of life whose lives have been turned
inside out by intense and powerful circumstances, I realize now more than ever just how
important it is for us to heal, to vocalize and to share our past hurt, shame and humiliation
with trustworthy people in our lives or through the aide and comfort of professional and
confidential therapy.

Acknowledging the pain is the first step to overcoming its deadly acid filled grip.  We have to
overcome it and we must defeat it because, once we heal, only then will we be able to grow
and become the vibrant instruments of God, Our Creator has intended for us to be.

I’ve used the following old analogy several times and I will continue to use it until I can find
an even more effective one to use.

Forgiveness is not forgetting.  It is letting go of the pain.  In fact it is similar to a childhood
scar that you might have on your body.  Although you may still have a physical scar to remind
you of the painful experience (i.e. falling off your bike), whenever you touch the scar there is
no pain to be felt. This is what forgiveness is.

You don’t ever forget falling off your bike or whatever the origins of your pain might be.
Hence you continue to have a memory of the incident as your emotional scar to remind you of
the bad things that have happened to you in your life.

However when you reflect upon the memory of what has happened, all of the anger, rage,
jealousy and insecurities that you once associated with the incident will no longer come
rushing to the forefront.  This is what true forgiveness is.

Forgiveness is not forgetting but instead it is letting go of the pain.

I encourage you to let go of your pain. Vocalize what has happened to you with trustworthy
people in your lives or seek out professional help through a therapist.  Either way you must
admit, vocalize and face the pain one last time before you make the emotional decision to
finally let it go.

Yes, it might be very difficult to do so and you may even fall back into the anger trap from
time to time, but by making the repeated step in the direction of letting go you will open up
entire mansions of opportunities in your life you never thought were possible.

Healing is an amazing, life-altering experience.  I highly recommend that you try it today!
