Fashion For Men by: Herndon Davis
|
Up until now, the ever evolving fashion industry has been almost entirely focused
upon the likes, dislikes, and whims of the female consumer. Typically the most
creative and trendiest creations that have come from the depths of a fashion designer’
s imagination are almost exclusively geared towards women. In fact female fashion
models are paid inordinately higher salaries than their male counterparts which really
cements the industry’s attention upon women as being the foremost focal point and
consumers.
But now the runway is being swirled in the opposite direction as a bold new fashion
concept and a multi-media website has been launched totally dedicated to the fashion
consciousness of men. A brainchild of Sydney, Australia, native, Hareth Tayem,
MaleOrderOnly.com targets men of every persuasion with a focus on revolutionizing
the entire men’s fashion industry.
Pants and shorts, tops and jackets, tees and tanks, skin and fragrances and so much
more! It’s a candy store of fashion for the stylishly deficient, for the clothes whore
that lies in some of us, and for the average guy who’s completely clueless without his
girlfriend or wife picking out his socks for him.
“Even though I set out to create this site for one demographic - straight guys that
hated shopping but still cared about what they wore - in the last few months,
fashionable gay men have become obsessed with the site and I have a few handful
of girls that find this a perfect place to shop for the guy in their life. I’ve even had
females order men’s items in their size… so I have had to come up with campaigns
and advertisements that cater for all who shop,” Hareth explains.
But still the idea had to grow legs, crawl and walk a little before taking flight. This
was not an overnight process and took some time to develop. “I actually
conceptualized this idea about 2-3 years ago. I was hesitant however because the
internet was such a scary place for me. I didn’t realize how popular and accessible
cyberspace was. It eventually took me 6 months to put a team together with a few
minor hiccups , and since the launch in May 2006 , its been relatively smooth
sailing,” shares Hareth.
Since the MaleOrderOnly.com is a collaboration of many different fashion
designers, vendors, and companies which showcase their male focused products
on the site, it took a while for Hareth to find just the right fashion designers who
could provide him the style, look and feel that he was seeking for the site.
Once he was able to get the right designers on board, he encountered more
challenges as an entrepreneur developing a start up company. “Launching this
whole business on my own has been the major challenge! I have woken up many
times feeling sick in the stomach thinking what am I doing??????? This is soooo
stupid but then, without fail, someone would remark on what an amazing idea it
was and they would be the first
one to order something. So as time went by, my confidence snowballed which
took care of those low days. It made my life so much easier when I started
approaching a few labels to sign on and within the first few weeks, labels started
approaching me!”
Barely six months after its launch, MaleOrderOnly.com is home to 45 fashion
designers and vendors providing a wide array of products from underwear, to
jackets, to cologne to sunglasses for men.
Here you will find the best of what the fashion industry offers men... and men only.
The site is a sleek looking photo gallery of what’s hot from designers from some
popular labels along with some fresh, new independent designers from across the
world. With a click of a button you access a men’s world of clothing, aftershaves,
skincare and the latest in boys’ toys, from sand boards to Vespa motorbikes.
“I want to introduce my site as an injection that reinterprets the way guys
shop…We source what’s hot and usually hard to obtain and put them in one place.
MaleOrderOnly.com finally acknowledges how guys are meant to shop… online,
without moving an inch. That’s minimal effort with maximum results!” Hareth exlains.
In fact, for the first time many designers will have their latest collections available for
online purchasing. So, the online store is a breeding ground for style, creativity and
for up and coming designers.
“I was surrounded by the rag trade from birth. My mother is a seamstress and my
dad was a tailor, naturally bringing me up sewing from the age of 12. I remember
coming home from school and was made to help sew on an industrial sewing
machine with my mum and her co-workers for 2 hours before I could even do my
homework!” Hareth reveals.
After growing up in the western suburbs of Sydney, he found that his dreams were
being hindered as his parents dictated a strict religious way of life. So at the
ambitious age of 18, Hareth broke family tradition and beliefs by relocating to
Vancouver to start his acting career, but life was going to make sure there was
more. He eventually made his way to New York City and has modeled around the
globe and also has starred in television and in commercials.
“I love acting. I’ve been doing that since I was [what?]. I have been acting on TV
commercials and on a TV series which I love. So the idea is to become an actor on
some sort of TV series with a fashion business. Confused yet? Well welcome to
my world!” he laughs.
Hareth now resides full-time in Sydney where he has a distinct appreciation for his
home town. “I’m so lucky being born and raised here in Australia. It’s an amazing
country and the lifestyle is like none other. Nothing gets too stressful here and
nothing gets way too serious. When the going gets tough, you just go to the beach
for a surf or a swim or at least attempt to as I’ve been unglamorously knocked out
by freak waves many times. We are after all a big fat island that’s so far away from
everyone else,” he jokes.
Already his company has partnered with the Italian beverage company, Peroni in
an over 500 media, VIP and celebrity attended "Fashion In a Peroni Bottle” event
in San Francisco. The event launched the new Peroni Nastro Azzurro brand while
highlighting two of MaleOrderOnly.com’s hottest fashion designers Niki Flynn
and FASHION ASSASSIN in a high energy fashion show.
So what future initiatives can we expect from Hareth Tayem and his online store?
“I will launch MBAY LIVE which will be an online auction for guys. It will cut out
all the crap and junk you find on other online auction sites and focus more for
men who want to sell or buy designer and stylish gear second hand. Check out
www.mbaylive.com!
In a few months I will also be allocating a personal profile page to all members
which will keep the MaleOrderOnly community alive and chatting. There, we will
feature a members’ wardrobe. Every designer featured on M.O.O. will get
their own page to showcase their full collections,” he interjects.
As the rapidly changing world of fashion continues to reinvent itself,
MaleOrderOnly.com will be there leading the way for men of all styles, interests
and diversity who’s common focus is simply to be stylish.
