Empowering The World's Diversity

This past Sunday Church was phenomenal. Dr. Bernard Beckwith of Agape preached from his theme
for the month of January, The Eternally New You. He stressed that our lives are constantly unfolding
but many of us are actually preventing the process by occurring due to our limited point of view and
understanding.
Yesterday’s sermon was titled “The Way and the Means.” He encouraged us to do the following 4
things in order to realize the fulfillment of peace, joy and abundance within our lives:
1. Get Out of The Way. We should quit trying to manipulate situations and factors in our lives in order to
create the outcome that we would like to see happen. Instead he encouraged us to have a non-attachment to
the outcome of our goals. Instead we should continue to have our own personal goals and objectives, but we
should not hold them so tightly that we create a sense of separation from them. Thus we should have a non-
attachment to them. Non-attachment however is not the same as detachment.
Non-attachment recognizes the significance of our situation, goals, aspirations, etc but instead seeks to NOT
become emotionally tied to the outcome. God’s vision is far greater than our own. But often we hold on to
our limited understanding not realizing that if we only got out of the way and if we had a non-attachment to
the situation’s outcome, we would actually be blessed with far more than we could possibly comprehend.
But we must let go of our own sense of control and manipulation of the situation.
2. Next, he encouraged us to spend at least one day a week as if it were a microcosm of our entire lives. In
other words, instead of living our lives for tomorrow or the next week or for what we’d like to do far in the
future; we should live for today as if it were our last day on earth!! In fact we should live as if our lives were
already unfolded, not reaching towards the future but instead embracing the here and now, today!
3. Finally, we must take action. Whether it’s through a symbolic act or through a real one, we must make a
move towards the direction of health, wholeness, joy, peace, and abundance in our own lives. We must
visualize our actions and we must realize our actions!
So for the remainder of Sunday I reflected upon this powerful sermon. In fact the sermon helped me to cope
with a situation that I suddenly encountered later that night. Instead of trying to interject myself into the
situation and control it, I instead simply let it go.
I still value the situation and the elements within it, but I took action and decided for the first time in a very
long time to have a non-attachment to it and to its outcome. In essence, I released from my emotional grasp
a situation with its goals, aspirations and desires I had kept close to me for several years.
Once I made the action to finally have a non-attachment to the elements, factors and the outcome, I started to
have severe physical convulsions because letting go of the outcome was a painful decision but it had to be
done. I had to have a non-attachment to it so that God could unfold something far greater within my life. In
essence, I had to get out of the way!!
Monday morning I felt emotionally and physically better. From that point forward I have pledged to hold
these three truths as guiding posts in facilitating the unfolding peace, joy, love, wholeness, and abundance
within my life.
